lighthouse bakery,
Worth visiting even just to sniff the place, this artisanal bakery uses traditional hand-moulding and slow proving prior to baking. It’s owned and run by Rachel Duffield and Elizabeth Weisberg, who don’t use artificial enhancers and scrimp on salt, sugar and fat to keep things as healthy as possible. The selection includes New York rye, traditional English wheat breads, and chocolate bread. Pastries are a sensation – especially hammentaschen (triangles filled with plum puree), chinois (brioche filled with crème patissier), not to mention their peanut butter cookies, rugelach (rich pastry rolls) and seasonal muffins. Pure foodie bliss.

l’artisan du chocolat,
London is now one of the best places in the world to buy chocolate. But top of the chocs is this jewel-box of a store, filled with precious gems such as tonka bean, verbena and lapsang souchong-flavoured chocolates, plus rare bean couvertures made into South Sea pearls. Buy a sweet gift here for as little as £3, or make a grand gesture by lavishing £100 on a hand-made pyramid box.
